Students and volunteers in Galapagos

Teaching, Care, Arts and Sports Projects

Empowering local students and the community through English teaching, care placements, sports coaching, and creative arts.

Teaching Programme in the Community Centre

Mission: provide sustainable educational support in disadvantaged communities, reduce inequality in education, and equip students to engage confidently in a multi-national community.

Objectives

  • Research and document new teaching aids (flash cards, story books, visual aids).
  • Use creative techniques, songs, and role-play to build listening and speaking skills.
  • Grow vocabulary and phrases while keeping English fun.

Important Notes

  • Teach in English; prepare lesson plans ahead of class.
  • Give individual attention, observe and evaluate progress, and keep notes per child.
  • Encourage students; report any suspected abuse or bullying to William.
  • Dress smart casual (jeans, smart T-shirts, long shorts; cover shoulders/cleavage).
  • Be proactive; suggest improvements and new worksheets or courses.
  • No TEFL required—patience and enthusiasm are enough.

You will teach conversational English in schools or community programmes. Focus on speaking; grammar expertise is not required. Expect at least 20 contact hours weekly. English levels vary by school; you may assist teachers or run classes with another volunteer. Art, drama, or music interests are welcome—tell William.

Materials are provided (markers, paper, games, worksheets, crayons, books). Ask the office a day in advance for photocopies or supplies. School holidays run March–April; the centre runs a summer camp with English, art, crafts, and sports.

You may work in a school, the Community Centre, or both. Community Centre classes (ages 6–17) run 2–5/6 pm, grouped by age/English level (up to ~25 students). No experience needed; enthusiasm and dedication matter most. Spanish is not required but helpful. Share any special skills so they can be included.

Teaching in Local Schools

Morning classes run 7:15–12:30 pm. Volunteers support teachers; summer holiday is March–April.

A Typical Day & Personnel

You can teach mornings and plan in afternoons—or the reverse. With enough volunteers, two or more share a class; with fewer, you may lead solo. If you prefer pairing, tell William so classes can be combined.

Summer Camp

Runs March–April with English, art, crafts, and sports. Arrive early to help plan trips and materials.

Spanish and Travel Notes

Basic Spanish helps but is not required; lessons can be arranged. Teachers traveling during placement pauses lessons. Formal agreement with Ministry of Education: 10 weeks teaching allows 2 weeks travel; under 12 weeks generally no travel time. Coordinate travel with William around holidays or gaps.

Care Programme

Work in kindergartens with classes up to 25 children aged 3–5. Many have limited early educational support, so interactive, fun activities matter: cutting, sticking, games, songs, alongside the classroom teacher.

Children may not speak English; use Spanish where you can and interactive activities to engage them. Your interests (sport, art, music, drama) are welcome. Start observing, then develop your own projects with support from a supervisor.

Mission

Provide sustainable educational support, care, and protection to enhance physical, social, emotional, and cognitive development.

Goals

  • Assist teaching during classes and support children with special needs.
  • Teach basic English vocabulary and organize fun, safe games.
  • Improve classroom rules and discipline with teachers; supervise breaks and playtime.

Sports

Sport is very popular but resources are limited. With energy and enthusiasm you can coach basketball or football, plan training sessions, and improve fitness, technique, and teamwork.

Emphasis is on enjoyment and participation. Many volunteers combine afternoon sports with morning care or teaching placements.

Creative Arts Project

Art & Murals

Teach painting, drawing, and recycled-material projects; paint educational murals on school walls.

Dance & Acting

Teach dance techniques; develop acting skills through role-play to build English fluency, write scripts, and direct short plays.

Music

Teach instruments (guitar, piano) and singing to children and teenagers.
