Teaching Programme in the Community Centre
Mission: provide sustainable educational support in disadvantaged communities, reduce inequality in education, and equip students to engage confidently in a multi-national community.
Objectives
- Research and document new teaching aids (flash cards, story books, visual aids).
- Use creative techniques, songs, and role-play to build listening and speaking skills.
- Grow vocabulary and phrases while keeping English fun.
Important Notes
- Teach in English; prepare lesson plans ahead of class.
- Give individual attention, observe and evaluate progress, and keep notes per child.
- Encourage students; report any suspected abuse or bullying to William.
- Dress smart casual (jeans, smart T-shirts, long shorts; cover shoulders/cleavage).
- Be proactive; suggest improvements and new worksheets or courses.
- No TEFL required—patience and enthusiasm are enough.
You will teach conversational English in schools or community programmes. Focus on speaking; grammar expertise is not required. Expect at least 20 contact hours weekly. English levels vary by school; you may assist teachers or run classes with another volunteer. Art, drama, or music interests are welcome—tell William.
Materials are provided (markers, paper, games, worksheets, crayons, books). Ask the office a day in advance for photocopies or supplies. School holidays run March–April; the centre runs a summer camp with English, art, crafts, and sports.
You may work in a school, the Community Centre, or both. Community Centre classes (ages 6–17) run 2–5/6 pm, grouped by age/English level (up to ~25 students). No experience needed; enthusiasm and dedication matter most. Spanish is not required but helpful. Share any special skills so they can be included.
